Week 1

"Create a blog this week on your experience with Mexico or Guatemala, Belize, Honduras ...meaning have you been there? Are you from there? Whether you have or have not been there...give me three things that come to mind when you think about any of these countries and then explain why  those things remind you of that particular place. "

I have yet to travel to any of the places listed above, but my parents have been to Belize and are going to Mexico in a few weeks. I would love to travel to Guatemala and Belize soon.

One thing that comes to mind when I think of these places is the abundant culture. My parents always talk about the festive music and clothing, and I just imagine these places being full of rich cultural events and festivities!
The second thing that comes to mind is the food. I've seen pictures of what my parents ate in Belize and the quantity and quality of the food was just above and beyond the food that you eat on a normal basis. The custom in Belize is to keep bringing food to the customer until they tell you they're full. My parents weren't aware of that, and they were shocked at how many courses kept coming.
The third thing I think of when I think of Mexico are the beaches. I have seen so many pictures of beautiful beaches of Mexico, and I really hope I get to travel to one of these countries soon!

  1. Mexico and Central America can definitely be a gorgeous country to visit if you know where to go. Although if you have not traveled in a foreign country before you might be quite shocked by the readily apparent difference between rich and poor. Certainly Cancun, Puerto Vallarta and Cabo are excellent places to visit and yes the restaurants will often serve you food until you cannot move, they also tend to serve more tequila than you can drink too!

The beaches in Cancun are phenomenal especially on the North western coast. They are the perfect beaches as often depicted in the Corona commercials. Cozumel which is an Island off of Cancun is great place to check out as well. Slower pace of life there and sparsely populated.

  2. Hello Mikayluh,

I agree with you blog, I have not been to any of those places. I have always wanted to see Belize and check out the closest third world country in our hemisphere. The more I study the culture the more I realize that it is probably not a country like India, where raw sewage and garbage are flowing down the gutters of streets. The surf has attracted me to the coast's and the Pyramids have enticed me enough to start planning a vacation to Central America in my future. Great post keep up the good work, James

  3. Hello Michaela I agree with you the food is great there...even if you have never tried it I am sure you would love it. Now Mexico is not just made up of beautiful beaches and scenery's but it also has it's ugly little places to go with it. Just keep in mind that there are horrible dangerous places in Mexico.

  5. Hello Michaela, I too haven't traveled to these countries and would like to in the furture. Most of all I would like to visit Belize because of it's amazing ecotourism and physical geography/geology. Plus I have heard the beaches are beautiful there.

  6. I have some friends who have traveled to Belize and have said the same thing about the food. I think that's an awesome custom because I definitely like to walk away from a meal full. I have heard Belize has amazing scuba diving and I would certainly like to travel there someday.

  7. Michaela,
I hope that you are able to fulfill your travel desires sometime soon! When I think about Mexico and Belize, I think aabout all of the beautiful photos of beaches that I have seen on television, in magazines, moves and travel posters. My daughter visited some of the beaches in Baja and she told me that they were very beautiful and not heavily visited. She and her husband had a wonderful time. By coincidence, one of the few campers that she met there was from Lake Tahoe, and they had mutual acquaintences from there. I am sure that some of the photos that we see through the mainstream media are set up to allow authorities to make sure that the beauty shots come out just right, but I guess we do that in the US, too.

  8. Hi Michaela,
I very much enjoyed reading your views on these beautiful places. You brought a smile to my face! Your positive and enthusiastic words give a vivid picture of these colorful cultures. Your parents have obviously enjoyed visiting Mexico and Belize and I hope you too can visit these beautiful places to experience it for yourself. Thank you for bringing out the positive influences and not just the unfortunate sadness that is also present.

  9. I find this region fascinating! I culture and celebrations are unlike anywhere else in the world. I was down in Honduras over Christmas break and had the opportunity to experience their holiday celebrations. I was eye opening to see their music come to life in familiar tunes. They could take a simple song like we wish you a Merry Christmas, and ad their cultural flare to it, making the experience something that is unique. One particular memory from the trip happened in a large mall. I local band was playing in the mall, but the way the music echoed through the corridors was almost haunting how beautiful it was.

The food in the region is also something that can be talked about in great detail. One fantastic thing that comes with their culture is their nature to share and invite you into your home. A lot of seasoned travelers will say don't eat in a small home with locals, but that is where authentic cuisine comes from. While in theory you are taking a risk, if it good enough to feed their families, it cannot really be terrible. The best food I have had overseas has been in small local hole in the wall places.

I loved reading your post! I hope you get the opportunity to travel down to Central America. I urge you to go, having several positive experiences for myself I love the area.
